Choose the appearance first. The condition of the surface determines how to achieve it.
A base for paint
Smooth walls provide a calm background for colour, light and furnishings. Discuss paint-ready plaster alongside your chosen paint and lighting. Dark colours and light falling along the wall can make small imperfections more noticeable.
Paint-ready or wallpaper-ready?Texture you can feel
Decorative plaster, spachtelputz and swirl finishes each create a different texture. Consider the grain, colour and whole wall. A larger sample helps you judge the effect in your own light.

Old textures, damage and cracks need an assessment of the existing layers first. You can then decide between local repairs and refinishing a larger visible surface.

A carefully finished room depends on the details: edges around window frames, the line along the ceiling and preparation for painting all contribute to the result.
- Before work starts: agree on the substrate, finish and scope of work.
- During the work: identify any issues and agree on the next steps.
- At handover: inspect the agreed finish together and discuss any further work.

Your plastering, step by step.
Six illustrated steps show the process, from your first ideas to finished walls and ceilings.

Tell us about your plans
Send an overview photo and estimated wall and ceiling areas. Discuss your preferred finish and agree on the scope of work.

Prepare the room
Clear the room and protect floors, window frames and fixed items as agreed. Confirm who will carry out the preparation.

Check the substrate
Have adhesion, damage and junctions between materials assessed. The chosen system determines the repairs and any primer needed.

Apply the plaster
The agreed plaster layers are applied and finished. Smooth, wallpaper-ready or textured: the desired result guides the work.

Let it dry well
Follow the agreed ventilation and indoor-climate advice. Check that the plaster is suitable before applying paint or wallpaper.

Check the finish and plan the next step
Check the agreed surfaces and edges together. Record any outstanding points and plan the handover for painting or wallpapering.

Describe the work room by room. Photos, approximate measurements and details of the existing finish help us assess your plans. Mention other work, such as a new kitchen or service installations, that affects the plastering.
Agree who will clear and protect the room and provide access. Confirm when the substrate will be assessed and who will check drying and apply the final decoration. Good preparation gives everyone a clear scope.

Your questions about plastering.
The right choice depends on your home, the existing surface and the finish you want to apply afterwards.
All questions and answersHow much does plastering cost per m²?
The cost depends on the finish and condition of the substrate. Our guide prices include materials, labour and VAT. Use the calculator for an initial estimate, then request a quote for your rooms and scope of work.
Can a textured wall be made smooth?
This is possible when the existing layer is suitable for the proposed system. Have adhesion, texture and damage checked. Deep unevenness and loose areas need different preparation from a thin finishing coat alone.
What is the difference between paint-ready and wallpaper-ready plaster?
The surface must suit your chosen paint or wallpaper. Consider the final material and lighting, and agree which sanding, cleaning and priming tasks will be carried out by the decorator.
How long does new plaster take to dry?
There is no single drying time for every home. The product, thickness, temperature, humidity and ventilation all matter. Have the surface checked before painting or wallpapering.
Can walls and ceilings be plastered together?
Walls and ceilings can be included in one plan. Specify the area and finish for each, then coordinate the sequence with installations, protection and access.
Do you work with Knauf?
Yes, we work with Knauf. We select the products and plaster system to suit the existing surface and desired result.
What should I include in a quote request?
Send one overview photo per room, close-ups of damage or texture, approximate dimensions and your preferred finish. Include the location, timing and details such as high ceilings or furniture that will remain in place.
Is painting included in the plastering quote?
Only if this is agreed. Ask for a clear description of plastering, any further preparation, drying checks, priming and the final paint or wallpaper finish.
