Understanding a plastering quote
Surface, preparation, finishing and accessibility.

Read the quotation in the order of execution
First the meters and starting points
Check the wall and ceiling area, height and special components per room. Ask what assumptions have been made about the existing substrate. Let it record how openings and sides of window and door openings are counted. When one quote starts from a bare wall and the other from removing old layers, the amounts seem similar while the assignment differs.
Then work and finalisation
Find the posts for protection, preparatory work, repair and the chosen finish. Check that cleaning, waste and accessibility are included where they are needed. Ask where the work is delivered. A description as paint-ready does not replace the appointment about cleaning, primer and painting.
Finally, planning, changes and total
Check the total including the VAT mentioned and read how additional work is discussed. Ask at a set post on which the amount is based and when the actual size becomes known. Make changes before execution. Save the final quote and additions together so that the delivery can be checked against the same description.
This is what you discuss in advance
- Meters and method of measurement.
- Starting points and preparatory work.
- Material, desired finish and further finishing.
- Planning, extra work and total amount.

More than an amount per square metre
The surface to be treated is a basis for the calculation. The condition of the substrate, the construction of the plaster layers and the finish also determine how much work and material is needed.
Compare the same activities
View whether protection, repair, pre-treatment and disposal are included. Compare walls and ceilings separately where the calculation makes that distinction.
Record exceptions
A clear quote appoints units, VAT treatment, including work and exclusions. Agree how unexpected repair is assessed and priced before it is carried out.
Discuss your situation
An article gives general explanation. The correct execution follows from the assessment of your space, the chosen materials and the manufacturer's requirements.
Ask your question.Compare the same total package
Keep wall and ceiling gauges separately and decide on gross or net measurements. Ask which preparation, protection, materials and follow-up finishes are included in the amount. Finally, compare a total inclusive VAT with clear exclusions and agreements about extra visible damage.
- Describe the existing condition.
- Make the desired result concrete.
- Capture preparation and follow-up.
- Save product data and appointments.

Comparing plastering quotes
Compare the total for the same work, finishing and tax treatment. A loose m² price does not tell the whole story.

Walls measure as width times height; ceilings as length times width. Keep both surfaces separate.

How do I compare a total price to a m² price?
First, let us make clear which meters and activities are included in both amounts. Then, calculate the same full assignment, including the necessary fixed items.
What do I ask at a couple's station?
Ask what work it means, what assumption has been used and how the final price is determined and discussed.
Compare like-for-like items in each quote
One price may include removing old layers, while a second quote assumes a directly suitable wall. First put such differences next to each other. Only after both parties describe the same result and preparation, you can compare the total amounts fairly.
A useful checklist
- Quantities: per room the walls, ceilings, sides of window and door openings and special shapes.
- Preparation: protection, dismantling, cleaning, removal and repair.
- Finishing: product type, plaster layer construction, visible desired finish and follow-up work.
- Appointments: VAT, exclusions, changes, planning and delivery.
