The answer to your situation

Quick answer

Walls measure as width times height; ceilings as length times width. Keep both surfaces separate.

Interior inspirationA light entrance with quiet walls.
Interior inspirationA living interior with natural light on the wall.

What should you check first?

Measure each wall separately and write down width, height and the existing finish. In a room of four by five meters and a height of 2.6 meters, the gross wall surface is 46.8 m². The ceiling is also 20 m². The floor area is therefore not a suitable replacement for the wall surface.

How does this affect your choice?

Write windows, doors, niches and sides of window and door openings loose. Large openings can reduce the net surface, while small surfaces and edges require extra work. If an opening is deducted, you agree in the quotation. A personal measurement is a starting point; the performer can check the numbers when inspecting on the spot.

Planning the next step

Distribute your overview into walls, ceilings and peculiarities. Add a simple map and overview photo per space. At bevel walls you measure the actual oblique length. Save your measurement for comparing quotes, so that one offer is not based on gross meters and the other on net meters.

Practical checklist

  • Measure wall height
  • Separate wall and ceiling
  • Note sides of window and door openings
  • Keep the gauge state

Questions about this topic

How do I calculate wall and ceiling meters?

Walls measure as width times height; ceilings as length times width. Keep both surfaces separate.

Which agreements help to implement the agreement?

Distribute your overview into walls, ceilings and peculiarities. Add a simple map and overview photo per space. At bevel walls you measure the actual oblique length. Save your measurement for comparing quotes, so that one offer is not based on gross meters and the other on net meters.

Record measurements clearly for someone else to follow

Write down the length and height of each wall per room. Calculate the ceiling separately with length times width. Put windows, doors, niches and sides of window and door openings on a separate line, so that the agreed gross or net measurement method remains verifiable later.

Discuss these points for your home

  • Specify the unit meter at each size.
  • Add a simple sketch with wall numbers.
  • Arrange how openings and small surfaces are calculated.

Worked example: a rectangular room

Take a room of 4 by 5 meters and 2.6 meters high. You first add the entire circumference for the walls. You calculate the ceiling separately. In this example, the gross surface is first recorded; deduction of openings is then agreed.

ComponentWhat should you discuss?
Perimeter4 + 5 + 4 + 5 = 18 meters
Gross wall area18 × 2,6 = 46,8 m²
Ceiling4 × 5 = 20 m²
Example: 8 m² openings46.8 − 8 = 38,8 m² net wall, in front of any side of window and door openings

For a slanted wall use the size of the real plane, not just the floor projection. Note sides of window and door openings and niches separately and ask how these are calculated in the quotation.
