When can you paint new plaster?

Adjust the follow-up step to the substrate and the selected product.

Practical explanation

Handover from plasterer to painter

Review before the first paint layer

Take a look at the entire wall and the connections with the painter. Discuss remaining small damage, dust and differences in suction. Ask who makes any corrections and if this will require drying time again. By doing this check before painting, it remains clear what follow-up step is needed and prevent a visible spot from disappearing directly under paint.

Connect primer and paint to the substrate

Pre-treatment for plastering is not automatically the right pre-treatment for paint. Let the painter indicate what belongs to the chosen substrate and paint. Please provide product details of the plastering. Also discuss the desired shine, colour and cleanability. These choices affect the final vision and maintenance.

Use a sample where the appearance is important

A colour sample on paper doesn't show everything. In case of a dark hue, special light invader or high demands, a representative test surface can help. Review this on the wall and with the planned lighting. Then record how the complete finish is done. Save colour and product data for later updating.

This is what you discuss in advance

  • Have the substrate assessed before painting.
  • Speak cleanse, update and primer.
  • Check color and shine in space.

The substrate shall be suitable

The step from new plaster to painting depends on the condition of the substrate and the requirements of the paint product. Please agree to check with the craftsman for plaster and paint.

Discuss pretreatment

Suction, small unevenness and dust can influence the finish. What pre-treatment is required depends on the substrate and the paint system. Use the product information as a starting point.

Plan space between works

Do not record a painting date solely on the basis of a standard drying time. Make the planning dependent on the assessment of the plastering and the conditions in the home.

Discuss your situation

An article gives general explanation. The correct execution follows from the assessment of your space, the chosen materials and the manufacturer's requirements.

Ask your question.

Adjust the paint system

Review drought, dust and suction and choose pre-treatment together with the paint. Capture who does sanding, cleaning and primer. A shiny colour or light that falls along the surface can influence the desired vision; so pass on that choice before the plaster is delivered.

  • Describe the existing condition.
  • Make the desired result concrete.
  • Capture preparation and follow-up.
  • Save product data and appointments.

Is primer for plaster also suitable under paint?

You can't assume that. The functions and applications may differ. Choose the pre-treatment that goes with the new paint buildup.

Can a dark paint show more unevenness?

The visual image is related to colour, shine and lighting. Discuss the choice in advance and assess an appropriate test surface at high demands.

A beautiful layer of paint starts with an accepted substrate

When the painter starts, dryness, adhesion and surface quality have to fit with the chosen paint system. Choose who does the control. By simply saying that the craftsman is ready for plastering, it is not yet determined that each wall can be painted directly.

A useful checklist

  • Have it confirmed that the plaster is suitable for the next treatment.
  • Voice removal, local sanding and restoration of small points.
  • Choose a pre-treatment that fits both substrate and paint product.
  • Look at a test surface with the intended colour, shine and lighting.
